Shades of Grey: Writing for a World That Isn't Black & White

Legendary singer/songwriter/producer Don Dixon will enlighten us about the art of songwriting. Dixon will concentrate on songs where topics are open ended. As he puts it, “not too preachy, not too idealistic, not too cynical, but multi-faceted & complicated like life really is.” As a songwriter Dixon is known for his ability to capture real moments in life and translate them into compelling stories you can listen to again and again. He has devoted his life to the popular song.

Dixon began playing and recording in his mid-teens, co-founding ARROGANCE, a band that helped forge the North Carolina scene which brought the world Let's Active and The dBs, along with dozens of other bands. Dixon went solo in 1983 and has released nine cds. His long-time touring band with Jamie Hoover and Jim Brock is called "Don Dixon & the Jump Rabbits." As a producer, he has worked with Marti Jones, REM, Smithereens and many, many others. In March 2009, VanZeno Press published Don Dixon's first book, Songs 101: The Lyrics of Don Dixon .

"Like Annette Bening's portrayal of Carolyn Burnham in American Beauty, the narrators in Dixon's songs provide a facade of pleasantries, while turmoil churns beneath the shiny, happy surface."
